Release Blitz & Review - Still Waters by Anne Malcom

Title: Still Waters
Series: Greenstone Security #1
Author: Anne Malcom
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 31, 2017

Blurb

There’s a phrase: Still waters run deep.

But there’s more to it than that.

Because "still" doesn’t denote peace. Nor calm. Nor happiness.

It’s an illusion. It's chaos.

The only way to handle chaos is to become it.

That’s what Lucy did. She created stillness out of the chaos tumbling inside her and called the most chaotic motorcycle club in the United States her family.

The Sons of Templar gave her chaos, friendship, family, danger and death.

But she wouldn't want it any other way.

Then he came. The one who showed her that her handle on chaos was tumultuous at best.

Showed her how to stand still.

And how good it could be.

And how drowning in those waters comes as easy as breathing.

Review

3.5 stars

Lucy has had a hard life and a fair amount of trauma. She is extremely closed off and is convinced she can out run her demons. Keltan is a soldier that meets Lucy and it is love at first sight for him. Keltan is definitely a case of the alpha male falling hard and knowing that Lucy is it for him. But Lucy isn’t ready for Keltan and pushes him away. He gives her the space she wants because he knows she is just going to keep running anyway. They end up crossing paths again when a story she is covering brings her to LA where Keltan runs his security business. He discovers she was at the scene of a crime and he steps in.

For the most part I enjoyed this story but the beginning really dragged for me. If you love overbearing alpha males, you will love Keltan. He is determined to have Lucy in his life no matter what. He just wants her to stop running. Lucy was frustrating and I hope this isn’t a trend with the future heroines in this series. It is hard to connect with a heroine’s POV when she starts to annoy you because she can’t get her head on straight. The constant push and pull was excruciating. I liked the murder mystery and I am looking forward to more books. Hopefully Heath and Luke’s story.

SHANDA'S REVIEW

4.75 stars

The Brave Line is the story of Rowdy; a newly minted police Sgt. and Michelle; a dispatcher that gets under Rowdy’s skin. If you have read the Balls in Play series you will recognize these two but this is definitely a standalone.

Michelle has made it clear for a while that she wants Rowdy but he doesn’t sleep where he works. These two keep dancing around each other until one night they finally give in. They continue their dance for a while but it’s not long before they are back in each other’s beds. But they both hold firm to sex and nothing more.

I have to say Michelle is pretty high on my list of favorite heroines. I love a strong heroine and she doesn’t back down. I also loved how she owned her sexuality and it just made her more badass. Michelle loves fast cars, hot and dirty sex, and living life to the fullest. She has made a new life for herself after an attack and she refuses to let it define her. Most romance heroines are written to be constantly afraid and the alpha male comes in to save her. Michelle doesn’t need that; she is her own woman and is in control. Michelle still believes in love and getting the life she wants even though she went through a scary experience. She knows Rowdy can break her heart but it’s not long before sending Rowdy out on calls starts to affect Michelle and she waits for his check in each night.

I really liked Rowdy too. I understood his fears because he has suffered more than one loss; so his actions made sense to me. He had a lot of baggage to wade through. Rowdy and Michelle were explosive together. They were dirty and hot and they were fun. He was the hard cop and she was the fire he can’t control. I loved that Michelle understood Rowdy and knew where his head was at. She waited him out even though it hurt and she put him through hell when he deserved it. These two were perfect for each other.

I loved the authors detail on the life of a cop and how we got to read about Rowdy in action day to day. I am not familiar with this life but I felt the fear the dispatchers had as they sent police out on calls. This story had a lot more depth than I was expecting. I thought the add in of current events brought in some realism to the story. This is definitely one of my favorite Kate Stewart books and the best cop romance book I have ever read. Well Done!

If You Were Mine

by Melanie Harlow

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Theo MacLeod wasn’t supposed to be the one.
Tall, dark and handsome suits me just fine, but the cocky grin, know-it-all attitude, and mammoth ego? No thanks. I only hired him so I wouldn’t have to sit at the singles table again. It was just pretend.
He wasn’t supposed to kiss me.
My heart wasn’t supposed to pound.
We weren’t supposed to spend the night together—the hottest night of my life.
One night turns into a snowed-in weekend away, and even the blizzard of the century can’t cool the fire between us. I can’t get enough—of his smile, of his body, of the way he makes me feel.
We’re nothing alike. He’s a daredevil, and I’m a nervous Nellie. He’s a drifter, and I want to put down roots. He’s an opportunist with a checkered past, and I’m a Girl Scout volunteer.
But none of it matters when I’m in his arms.
I know he’s made mistakes. I know his wounds are deep, and he doesn’t trust easily. I know he doesn’t believe he could ever be enough to make me happy, but he could.
All he has to do is stay.

Excerpt:

A guy in a black leather jacket set a coffee cup down on the table and sat opposite me. I looked over at him, feeling slightly awkward since I’d have to tell him he couldn’t sit there. He was handsome, with warm brown eyes and short dark hair, but he wasn’t Fred. “I’m sorry, I’m waiting for someone,” I said. “But I can move.” To my surprise, he smiled confidently. “Claire, right? I’m Fred.” I screwed up my face. “You can’t be. Fred has blond hair and blue eyes. I saw his picture.” He laughed, almost condescendingly. “I don’t use my real picture, Claire. People are crazy.” What? This made no sense. “I don’t understand. How can you advertise yourself with someone else’s photo? Don’t women get mad when you show up?” He shrugged, his grin turning a little cocky. “Haven’t had any complaints so far.” Actually, he was more attractive than the photo he’d used online—more rugged and masculine, with his scruffy jaw, big shoulders, and brawny chest. Meeting the real Fred was kind of like ordering the chicken piccata and being brought the Porterhouse, which hadn’t even been on the menu. But that wasn’t the point. (And I’d described someone completely different to Elyse.) “So, what, you use a fake photo to lure potential clients and then you set up the coffee meeting to check them out first?” I asked indignantly. “Wouldn’t you?” He shrugged out of his jacket. “It’s a scary world out there.” I crossed my arms, sitting up tall. “No! That’s a scam. I don’t like scammers.” “No, it isn’t. I don’t take any money from them. I don’t even talk to them, I just leave.” Frowning, I said, “That doesn’t seem right to me. These people are willing to pay you to hang out with them and probably feel bad enough about themselves already, and you just walk out without even giving them a chance?” He shrugged. “Look, if it makes you feel any better, I’ve only walked off a job once, and that was because I thought I recognized the woman. I prefer to keep my personal and professional identities separate. That’s fair, isn’t it?” Professional identity? He was a rent-a-date! I shook my head in disbelief. “Is your name even Fred?” “Does it matter?” “Yes,” I snapped. “How am I supposed to know what to call you?” He grinned as he leaned toward me and lowered his voice. “Call me anything you want. You’re the boss.” Was he flirting with me or making fun of me? I cleared my throat and pressed my knees tighter together. “I’d like to call you by your actual name, please. Bad enough I have to pay someone to play my fake boyfriend. I’d like something to be real, at least.” He held his eyes steady on mine for a moment. I felt like he was sizing me up, trying to decide if he could trust me, so I stared right back without blinking. If anyone at this table was trustworthy, it was me. “Theo,” he said quietly, his eyes dropping to my lips for the merest fraction of a second. “My name is Theo.” There. Was that so hard? I smiled at him before picking up my latte.“Well, it’s nice to meet you, Theo.” “What, you’re just going to believe me? You’re much too trusting, Claire. I bet people take advantage of you.” I set the cup back down on the saucer with an angry clank. “Is your name Theo or not?” “Shhh, it is, it is,” he said, laughing. Then he glanced over his shoulder like he was in the fucking CIA. “But I don’t give that out to just anyone. You should feel special.” iywm-trust-ad

SHANDA'S 4.5 STAR REVIEW

Claire is facing the dreaded single’s table at a wedding. This leads her to the website Hotties4Hire. What is the harm? She just needs a companion for the wedding to avoid looks of pity. She agrees to meet her hottie for coffee to make sure she wants to proceed. Theo is not who she pictured when she signed up. He is a bit brash and he riles Claire up when he reads her minutes into meeting her. She doesn’t like him pointing out why she is single. But desperate times call for desperate measures and she agrees to the date. They hit it off and they have one hot night together. Theo is clear with Claire that he can’t give her anything but a one night stand. The girl who is afraid to take risks decides to throw caution to the wind anyway.

Claire was a great heroine. She is lacking self-confidence but she is sweet and kind. She is also stubborn and set in her ways. The problem is she is too nice and not willing to takes risks to get what she wants. Theo has secrets and lots of baggage. He doesn’t see himself as good enough for Claire. He has major abandonment issues. But the more time he spends with Claire the more conflicted he is about where his life is headed. He is afraid of Claire judging him for his past mistakes. But Claire doesn’t judge people. She is gentle, loving, kind, loyal, and she is just what Theo needs in his life.

This has to be one of my favorite Melanie Harlow books. I really liked both Theo and Claire. They have to put in some work to get their HEA but they were perfect together. Well Done!
