From New York Times bestseller Katy Regnery comes a new twist on a beloved fairytale.

In this modern retelling of The Little Mermaid, a fisherman's daughter from an Outer Banks island untouched by time, meets the son of the North Carolina governor at a fancy party she helps to cater.

Laire, who wants more from life than her little island can offer, is swept away by wealthy, sophisticated Erik, who is, in turn, entranced by her naiveté and charm. The two spend a whirlwind summer together that ends on the knife-point of heartbreak and forces them to go their separate ways.

Years later, when fate finds them together once again, they will discover the terrifying depth of the secrets they kept from each other, and learn that shattered hearts can only be healed by a love that willfully refuses to die.

I liked this book a lot. When I finished I let out a sigh and smiled. It was the perfect balance of sweet and angsty.

Laire (an anagram of Ariel) grew up in a small fishing town in North Carolina. An old-fashioned town, conservative in thinking, where everyone's life path is planned from birth. For men, fishing. For women, getting married and having babies. Only Laire wants no part of it. She wants to move to a big city and go to school for fashion design. A husband and children are in the distant future.

While making a crab delivery across the water, Laire meets Erik. Erik also has his life path planned. He's the governor's son, he's set to go to law school, and eventually into politics. He doesn't want that for himself but he also doesn't care enough to object. But when he meets Laire it's life-altering. They spend the summer together falling in love.

Circumstances (*cough*Ursula*cough*) rip the couple apart and it's six long years before they're reunited. Erik lives a half life. He's sworn off love and women and he's become cold. Laire, however, left Erik with something to live for. I usually don't like this particular trope. I always think there better be a good reason for it. And I wasn't completely on board. But I get it. Laire had to be metaphorically silenced instead of physically as with Ariel. But that's the only thing I didn't care for.

I liked the way Regnery included all the major and minor characters - Laire (Ariel), Erik, Ursula, Vanessa, Sebastian, Flounder, Triton, Poisson, etc. I thought it was clever that they weren't all literal or expected. It wasn't cheesy and I appreciated that.

Even though this plot has been done many, many times before (I'm not talking about The Little Mermaid, I'm talking about the rich guy, poor girl, secret love, misunderstandings, separation, reunion, hea) it still felt fresh and I was hooked from beginning to end. It was very romantic and I highly recommend to any reader that likes sweet Heroes. Well done!

Twenty-five books later, Katy claims authorship of the multi-titled, New York Times and USA Today Blueberry Lane Series, which follows the English, Winslow, Rousseau, Story, and Ambler families of Philadelphia; the six-book, bestselling ~a modern fairytale~ series; and several other standalone novels and novellas.

Katy’s first modern fairytale romance, The Vixen and the Vet, was nominated for a RITA® in 2015 and won the 2015 Kindle Book Award for romance. Katy’s boxed set, The English Brothers Boxed Set, Books #1–4, hit the USA Today bestseller list in 2015, and her Christmas story, Marrying Mr. English, appeared on the list a week later. In May 2016, Katy’s Blueberry Lane collection, The Winslow Brothers Boxed Set, Books #1-4, became a New York Times E-book bestseller.

Katy lives in the relative wilds of northern Fairfield County, Connecticut, where her writing room looks out at the woods, and her husband, two young children, two dogs, and one Blue Tonkinese kitten create just enough cheerful chaos to remind her that the very best love stories begin at home.
